EV Charging Levels
There are three different levels of electric vehicle charging available. We recommend level three charging for commercial customers. Residential customers should choose the level that best meets their needs. Each level has the option of indoor or outdoor installation.
Level 1 is the slowest level of charging but also the easiest and cheapest way to charge. Depending on the model of electric vehicle and outdoor temperature, a full charge can take up to 48 hours. This type of charger uses a 20-amp, 120-volt outlet that looks like other exterior wall outlets.
Many homes have an outdoor outlet, but the outlet may only be 15-amp and not able to handle the demands of the electric vehicle charger. Additionally, the exterior outlet may need to be updated with a GFCI-type outdoor outlet and a weatherproof/in-use cover for keeping the outlet protected from rain and snow.
Level 2 offers a moderate charging rate. It uses a 20-amp, 240-volt outlet.
Level 3 offers the fastest charge rate available. It uses a 50-amp, 240-volt circuit. Depending on the electric vehicle, it can provide a full charge in as little time as three hours. This is the best option for commercial applications but is also a good option for residential customers with high charging demands.
